I am writing this review from Denver, Colorado, what must be the Capital of Ganja outside of California. It is more or less legal in the city here, where Rollin a J while waiting for the bus won't even make a person raise their eyebrows. My neighborhood in the west side smells like the middle of a Grateful Dead concert, plumed of the Dank Weed wafting from the rooftops of my neighbors. My preteen son can even tell the difference of when the folks up a few houses are smokin' the good stuff or the cheap nasty skunkweed. Heck - it is so popular around here, there are now officially more Marijuana dispensaries in Denver than there are Starbucks.
In honor of this, Today I am reviewing Dank's Purple Kush Energy Drink, a hemp infused Pot Leaf emblazoned drink from Canada. I must thank my good friend who brought me back a can to try from his long trip across the border.
Taste:3
For as much as the can was advertising the Hemp-y nature of the drink, I expected this to have the aroma of some good Weed. I was looking for something unique and just a little on the wild site. It smelled really good when the can was popped - like a red bull with lavender and a little sage. Pouring it into a glass, it came out a light lavender too, which fit with the Purple Kush theme, even though it did not look like Kush themed at all.
Unfortunately, the taste was 100% Red Bull clone. For all of the uniqueness of the can, and the delicious way it smelled, it was just another cloning of the Red Bull flavor. And in terms of clone, it wasn't a very good one either. It tasted a bit too bitter, and was not really sweet enough either. Hemp seed tastes nutty and are not bitter or sour, so they should have been able to balance the flavors more smoothly. While I would not say this tasted very bad, I would not say this tasted good - at least good enough to keep buying once the novelty wears off. It is just trying to go for a "classic" flavor and does not succeed.
Buzz:6
this is one of the areas in which this drink could make a clear difference in a person's health. After all, Hemp is a great source of Omega 3 and other essential fatty acids. It lowers your blood pressure. It contains all the essential amino acids necessary for human life, and help with fatigue, and a whole host of other benefits.
Most practitioners recommended daily intake for a person with an average build/ body fat profile is 1-2 tablespoons a day. While this can be upped to over 3 times that amount without any problems, Dank Energy drink has 2.5 mg of hemp seed oil. In other words, you will drown in Purple Kush before you get enough Hemp seed oil to have any benefit for you.
In terms of the other energy ingredients, There is a very nice 150mg of caffeine in here - not bad for a 12 ounce can. It also has the energy drink standards; Vitamin B complex, Inositol and some taurine too. While the worthless amount of Help seed oil might be what is driving the look and feel of this drink, the energy boost you get is pretty nice - about a couple hours of a kind and mild energy. Of course it comes with tons of High Fructose Corn Syrup and preservatives, so expect a big crash from it later too.
Packaging:9
If you are into the novelty of Pot themed Merch, then you will not be passing up this can. This can goes along with the Ganja shirts, hats, and general Pot Fiend Lifestyle. There are about half a dozen pot leaves on this dark purple can, and it is especially pretty. I know that because this is a Canadian drink , then had to make the ingredients label in French too, but they did a great job with a whole lot of text. The design is double faced, so it is easier for convenience store checkers to deal with. They label the caffeine content ( though not the calories - those strange Canadians...) and really came out with a unique looking energy drink package.
