I have tried a number of amazing high caffeine foods on this gig. Enough so that my kids don't even get excited when the mail deliverer shows up with a huge cooler at my door. I do,however, especially when that cooler is packed with dry ice - holding what is possibly the best packaged ice cream ever - Ben & Jerry's Fair Trade coffee Heath Bar Crunch.
Now why would I review ice cream? Just because it is an awesome sample from an awesome company? Heck no! Boys and Girls I give you the most caffeinated ice cream you can find in stores, (I live in the wrong part of the country for Edy's espresso chip, with a mere 6 more mg per serving) weighing in at energy drink levels of sugary creamy caffeinated bliss!
And being Ben & Jerry's, you don't need to have such a bad conscience when you eat the entire tub. Ben & Jerry’s is the first ice cream maker in the United States to introduce coffee flavors made with Fair Trade Certified™ coffee, helping small-scale farmers to get paid a fair price for the coffee beans they work so hard to grow. Paul Rice, Founder and CEO of TransFair USA, said that “Consumers care about quality. Increasingly, they also care about where their food comes from and how the farmers who grew it were treated. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream made with Fair Trade Certified™ coffee delivers on both fronts.”
Buzz:9
In terms of real nutrition, come on - its Ben and Jerry's. If you want healthy, suck an Ice pop. Now if you are looking for good ingredients in your ice cream - you KNOW you are getting only the good stuff in here. There are lots of yummy ingredients, even besides the big chunks of Heath bar. Cream, Egg Yolks, Butter, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter and almonds make this treat so delicious. And in case you really care, there are 280 calories in a serving with 150 calories from fat resulting in 25% of your daily value and 49% daily value of saturated fat. Not a whole lot of sodium, but lots and lots of energy!
If al the sugar does not give you a rush, there is whopping 41mg of caffeine per little serving, or you are looking at 168mg for the whole pint! That is the same caffeine content as a 16oz Monster or 2 cans of Red Bull. While there are a few small specialty coffee ice creams that might have a little more caffeine per ounce, the Coffee Heath Crunch will get you very very wired. I ate a whole pint by myself ( Just to test the caffeine amount - really) and my hands were almost jittering by the end. I had a great couple hours of nonstop energy before feeling the sugar and caffeine drain out of me. This is one treat that is definitely NOT for dinner-desert and NOT for kids!
Of all the Ben and Jerry's I have had in my life, I think this is my new ultimate favorite. The ice cream is very smoot and creamy, yet packed full of all the good caramel crunchiness I could hope for. I did not taste much whey filler or skim milk watery-ness, nor did it seem pumped up with air. The Heath bare pieces were really big, but not too big to fit into your mouth. The heath and the strong coffee flavor are a match made in heaven. If you are lucky enough to find this in your freezer section in your grocery store, I'm envious. This stuff is really fantastic!
Packaging:6
This is their standard package, with no real word over how much caffeine these pints have. I would probably list the caffeine content, or just something to warn those who who partake late, or have to share with the kiddos. Sure, it doesmention it is coffee flavored, but most people would not have guessed just how caffeinated it is.
The restofthepackage is your standard Ben and Jerry's - with Woody Jackson's famous cows and a backdrop of swirling Heath bars. While the flavor and the ingredients are something special, the package is about as simple as you could get.
